VANCOUVER OWNERS OF $4 MLLION HOME THEY PURCHASED FOR $40,000 SAY THEY CAN’T AFFORD NEW TAXES
In the early 1970s the Kent’s bought their home for $40,000 in one of the most desirable areas in Vancouver.
Today that home has risen in value to $4 million.
And because the new NDP government has introduced a new tax on all homes valued at more than $3 million the Kent’s face an additional tax of $2,000 a year – a sum they say cannot afford.
WHAT IT MEANS
But the Kent’s have options on how to pay the new tax but it is something they don’t want to do.
And the new tax could pose problems for people who bought houses last year.
Every Monday and Thursday George Froehlich brings you interesting, unique and fascinating people that share their stories and perspectives.
Sam Hauck – Mind Of A Wine Teacher
Sam, aka The Wine Teacher, has been an educator, a home winemaker, a wine judge for too many years to remember.
And it all started off with making homemade beer with a friend.
And then it progressed to wine with the same friend.
Wine that won awards for both Sam and his friend.
Today Sam is super busy.
Even his friends remark how he often is not available – given that the world wine is a whirlwind of endless activity.
Sam has offered wine education and appreciation courses for Pacific Breeze Winery, Capilano University, Eden West Fine Foods, Coquitlam and Richmond School Districts Continuing Education departments, the VAWA, the BCAWA as well as for various private functions. In addition, he trains staff and offers cellar evaluations.
In this edition of Cool Conversations Sam talks to George Froehlich about:
What is his number one piece of advice to people who like to drink wine.
The time he did a blind taste test with a top French wine and several B.C. wines and what the outcome was.
Why is B.C. wine higher priced than those wines from the U.S. and elsewhere.
Why is red wine more expensive than white wine.
Where wine is treated like a cocktail.
Why wines taste different when drinking them by themselves, compared when drinking them with food.
Why one world expert said B.C. wines are close and will catch up to some of the best French wines in the world.
Why today some $40 B.C. wines could end up costing anywhere from $150 to $200 a bottle.
B.C. producing the most variety of grapes in the world.
Why can’t we get decent B.C. wines for $9 to $10.
The time the wine world was shocked about B.C. wines.
A fabulous B.C. wine that men did not want to drink, but once they did they were amazed.
How he and his friend made a port wine by accident and it turned out to be fabulous.
B.C.’s Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines are awesome.
He has offered wine education and appreciation courses for Pacific Breeze Winery, Capilano University, Eden West Fine Foods, Coquitlam and Richmond School Districts Continuing Education departments, the VAWA, the BCAWA as well as for various private functions. In addition, he trains staff and offers cellar evaluations. You can follow him on Facebook and Twitter. He also blogs for My VanCity, an online magazine devoted to dining, wine tasting and lifestyle events in Vancouver.
