BIG CHANGES AWAIT YOU FOR YOUR GROCERY SHOPPING

THE STORY

Expect major changes at Safeway, Thrifty’s and IGA.
All of these 1,500 stores will introduce a new form of shopping.
They will try to convert customers to do their shopping on-line or via an app.

THE SETTING

The company announced it has entered into a partnership with a British company, Ocado, that uses robots to select a customers order from a central warehouse and then its gets delivered by truck.
Here is the video showing how the the robot fulfills an order.
And your shopping experience through the new system would look like this.
Although the on-line and app market for food shopping is still small it has great potential to grow.
And the U.K. market is about five years ahead of the Canadian marketplace.
Also Canadian grocery executives were shaken by the take-over of Whole Foods by Amazon, known for being super aggressive when it comes to e-commerce shopping.
Ocado is the world leader in on-line shopping and its services are in demand. Storing and delivering groceries is more complex than selling books or video games. And order placed through the company arrive within one hour from being placed on-line.
Food needs to be stored and delivered at the right temperature to ensure it doesn’t spoil. Ocado’s software helps trucks take the best route, so that deliveries arrive at the customer’s door within a one-hour window.
Canada’s online grocery market is still in its infancy.

WHAT IT MEANS

Expect other Canadian grocery chains to become more competitive as they try to capture customers to shop at their outlets.
And that means lower prices will become the norm rather than the exception.
