Canadian right-wing groups concern expert Bernie Farber and their growing influence is more than troubling.
In fact, he is deeply concerned.
Concerned that Canada is experiencing a growing resurgence of right-wing political ideology at the grassroots and political level.
Farber has a strong belief.
The recent killings of 11 people at a Pittsburgh synagogue by a white supremacist are clear evidence that Nazi ideology is on the rise.
Not only in the United but everywhere in the world, including Canada.
Farber is a Canadian expert on hate crimes, white supremacy and anti-racism.
Canadian courts call upon him regularly to testify as an expert witness on these topics.
Canadian Right-Wing Groups Concern Expert Bernie Farber
Farber has spent more than a quarter of a century focused on human rights, pluralism and inter-ethnic-faith-race relations.
He has been a social rights activist for decades.
And he was the former chief executive officer of the Canadian Jewish Congress.
The impact of Nazi policies for Farber are intensely personal.
His father was a Polish Jew.
He lost his first wife, two children and other family members in the Holocaust.
And Farber says his dad’s experience was a major motivation in his own life.
“…the pain my father endured during the war is what drove me to fight for social justice today.”
In my podcast interview on Cool Conversations Farber says:
Social media has to accept some major responsibility for right-wing ideology and hate groups gaining world-wide attention.
And the social media companies can play a role in preventing it from spreading but they would rather not because it is all about money.
But social media companies in Europe already are restricting extreme right-wing ideology on their sites.
For example, in Germany there is no dissemination of pro-Nazi propaganda.
Politicians in North America must force social media companies to do the same.
Some Canadian politicians are espousing right-wing ideology.
And he has two words for Canadians who like to think that racism is not a problem in Canada – not true.
And he is spot on.
In Canada racism is in the wide open.
But Farber says that should not come as a surprise.
Canada has a long history of racist, anti-Semitic and right-wing, ideology playing a role in our social fabric.
It laid low for a while but now it’s back – emboldened by what is happening in the United States with right-wing groups gaining prominence under the ideology of Donald Trump.
Farber is active on social media.
