Trudeau needs to stand up to Trump!
Canada has been out-foxed by a narcissistic bully, the childlike Donald Trump.
And now is the time for Canada to change its attitude towards the United States and how it conducts itself during the contentious North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) talks between Mexico and the United States.
The Trudeau government obviously was under the impression that Canada held a special place for the Americans.
And early in the Trump presidency the president gave the impression that Canada was indeed special.
And Trump gave credence to it by being chummy with Trudeau and telling the prime minister he did not have to worry about the U.S. imposing tariffs on Canadian imports; imposing tariffs being a cornerstone Trump’s new trade policy with other countries.
But little did the prime minister and his advisors knew what they were dealing with.
Trump can turn on a dime no matter what the issue is and boy, did he ever.
And then when things did not go his way Trump said he wanted to abandon NAFTA and sign individual trade agreements with Mexico and Canada.
In other words Trump continually changed the goal post and despite that Trudeau and his experts continued to be pleasant with Trump.
But then all of that blew up.
It happened during the G7 meeting – where world’s top countries discuss trade issues and other matters important to all of the – hosted by Canada in Quebec.
Trump showed up late for some meetings, he obviously felt the pressure of the world’s leaders telling him his trade tariff approach was wrong.
After Trump left the summit, early, in a hissy fit he pushed out one of his legendary tweets:
PM Justin Trudeau of Canada acted so meek and mild during our G7 meetings only to give a news conference after I left saying that, “US Tariffs were kind of insulting” and he “will not be pushed around.” Very dishonest & weak. Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!
“…international co-operation cannot be dictated by fits of anger and throwaway remarks”.
“You say the US President doesn’t care at all. Maybe, but nobody is forever…The six countries of the G7 without the United States, are a bigger market taken together than the American market.“
And Trudeau in a press conference after the summit said:
“Canadians are polite and reasonable but we will also not be pushed around”.
Trump’s top economic adviser Larry Kudlow and trade adviser Peter Navarro then took to the Sunday morning news shows to further attack Trudeau.
“He really kind of stabbed us in the back,” Kudlow said, while Navarro said: “There is a special place in Hell for any leader that engages in bad faith diplomacy with President Donald J Trump and then tries to stab him in the back on the way out the door.”
Trudeau’s office responded by saying he had “said nothing he hasn’t said before – both in public, and in private conversations with the president” and vowed to abide by the G7 final communique..
But fighting back is not good enough.
Now is the time for Canada to get tough with Trump and his bullies.
If Trudeau does not Canadians will remember that ,come next year, when Canadians go to the polls.
