Grinch political correctness gone amok over a London advertisement.
The new Grinch movie has a major public ad campaign underway.
But some people on social media are charging it is racism at its worst.
The ad is a 50-foot advertising wrapped around an IMAX theatre.
It features a picture of the Grinch.
And the words:
“Welcome to South London. This is your last chance to turn around.”
On the other side of the building, it states: “You are now heading north of the river. Try to contain your excitement.”
Grinch is a Dr. Seuss character.
He is best known as the main character of the children’s book: How the Grinch Stole Christmas!
He scorns Christmas and hates the singing of Christmas carols.
Grinch Political Correctness Gone Amok
But for some people the ad is racist.
And of course a furor has erupted on social media.
People are calling for a boycott of the movie.
One Tweeter put it this way:
“Welcome to South London
This is your last chance to turn around’
Nope. Not finding this funny @BFI Imax Waterloo – snobbery of South London is based on classist and racist stereotypes.
Genuinely tried hard not to be a Grinch about this but too much #SouthLondonPride”
And here is another one:
“will be boycotting the new grinch film due to vile anti south london slander on the giant ad for it on the waterloo roundabout imax”
So what is this really all about?
Is it racist?
Or is it political correctness gone too far?
I’m not clear why anyone would consider the ad to be racist?
But in this day and age of social media narcissism, gaining great prominence often is the main objective.
So let’s call it – the excess of political correctness.
Today anyone can take offence on just about anything and everything.
And fear not, it happens on a regular basis.
