But there is a problem.

“Many physicians are not stressing the importance of plant-based diets as a first-line treatment for chronic illnesses,” says a new report.

It was produced by Permanente.

They are the largest medical group in the United States.

It consists of 9,000 physicians and 35,000 nurses.

The authors of the report reviewed existing studies that included vegan, vegetarian, and  Mediterranean diets.

Their study concludes:

“Healthy eating may be best achieved with a plant-based diet, which we define as a regimen that encourages whole, plant-based foods and discourages meats, dairy products, and eggs as well as all refined and processed foods.”

Here are the five highlights:

Lower obesity rates.

A vegan or vegetarian diet is great for weight loss.

Vegetarians lose an average of one pound a week, without exercising.

Vegan diets burn more calories after eating, compared with non-vegan diets which store some food as fat.

Prevention and management of diabetes

Vegetarians have about half the risk of developing diabetes as non-vegetarians.

Non-vegetarians were 74 per cent more likely to get diabetes over a period of 17 years, compared with vegetarians.

Lower heart disease risk

One study concluded that 82 per cent of patients with heart disease following a plant-based diet were able to reverse hardening of the arteries.

And this happened even for severe cases after one year.

Lower blood pressure

Vegetarian diets lowered blood pressure in patients.

This was both for the systolic and diastolic blood pressure

And vegetarians had a 24 per cent reduction in coronary heart disease, compared with non-vegetarians.

Increased longevity

Plant-based diets were associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality compared with non-plant-based diets.

Eating a lot of red meat increases the risk of dying from heart conditions and other diseases.

Seven studies concluded that vegetarians scored 29 per cent lower of dying from heart disease than non-vegetarians.
