The horrific treks illegal immigrants take.
We have seen and read a lot about them.
But few of us really understand as to the why of it all.
Why do these people uproot their families often with small children to trek across the wastelands of Latin America to make it to the United States.
Questions we often ask ourselves are:
Why do the parents risk the lives of small children?
Why do these people use human smugglers to help them reach their destination – fully aware that some of these ruthless smugglers will rape the mothers, threaten the children and in some cases even murder some of these people?
For starters we have to try to fathom the conditions most of these people try to escape from.
Most of these asylum seekers live in abject poverty. aNd they are subject to a lot of violence by local gangs and drug cartel members.
So they will risk everything to escape and all in the hope of making it to the United States.
“In some Central American cities, smuggling services to the United States are openly promoted on the streets, with hawkers luring customers the way agents at tourist destinations advertise sailing or snorkeling excursions. They take potential customers to a back room of a nearby store, where salesmen pitch them on a smuggling route. Some would-be migrants give up homes, cars, livestock and even farmland tilled by their families for generations and take on debt to pay the fees.”
And on their journey they will have to contend with bribes and shakedowns.
Days in hideaways without food.
