Trained crows pick up garbage.
It’s happening at a French park.
Six crows have been trained to patrol a popular theme park in France.
To collect cigarette ends and other rubbish.
In return they get food when they deliver the garbage.
The Puy du Fou park, is in the western Vendee region of France.
Crows are super intelligent.
It is amazing what they can do.
They have the intelligence of seven-year-old children.
The crows in the French park deposit the garbage in a box.
And when they do they get a tasty morsel of food as a reward.
The crows are called rooks .
They are considered a ‘particularly intelligent” member of the crow family, says Nicolas de Villiers, head of the Puy du Fou park.
“In an affectionate, supportive atmosphere, they like to communicate with humans and establish a relationship through play,” he said.
And these trained crows are hard and quick workers.
They can fill a bucket with garbage in less than 45 minutes.
The idea for using the crows to pick up garbage came from Christophe Gaborit.
He is a park falconer.
The crows, he said, were motivated by the reward and they soon understood how the game worked.”
“The goal is not just to clear up, because the visitors are generally careful to keep things clean” but also to show that “nature itself can teach us to take care of the environment”, says Nicolas de Villiers .
Researchers see a great future for crows collecting garbage.
